Mickey Thompson... used extra tires instead of jackstands. Dig it. But some asshole at the track mixed the nitro 3 times what he wanted the engine to run, it blew up. Cost him a 1/4 million of investment

Mickey Thompson’s front-engined, front-wheel-drive setup.

The aluminum small-block Chevy wore Thompson’s own DOHC cylinder heads. After driver Bob Mathouser made multiple practice laps at 154-plus on straight methanol (compiling a front-drive-record average of 153.374), Thompson rejetted for 15-percent nitro for qualifying.

The track’s fueling station either accidentally or intentionally pumped in a 42-percent load that fried the engine on Mathouser’s warm-up lap, wiping out an investment that M/T pegged at $250,000.
